The Birth of Wilomark Music and Imagery Studios

Well I never thought I would get here.  When I started my journey into the world of professional photography, I was in awe of all the amazingly talented photographers there are, particularly in our little Canberra community. Working out of my garage and then our converted loungeroom, I dreamed for the day I would have a purpose build studio with lots of room and options for shooting both natural light and studio lighting.  My dream is coming true.

I've decided to put together a pictorial story of the different stages of the build so far.  Although the Photography part of the studio is nearly finished, we are in the process of also building a recording and rehearsal studio for musicians.  More on that as it develops.

The first decision was location.  It needed to be somewhere that had lots of natural light and big enough to cater for both studios.  We finally found the perfect space in Molongolo Mall, Fyshwick ACT. Once we found it, we looked at the horrible carpet, sickly looking yellow walls and knew we had a lot of work in front of us to get it just the way we wanted.

First things first, lets get the colour right.  As a photography studio I wanted it to be nice a bright and most importantly I wanted light so the walls all got painted white.  We couldn't paint the back section of the studio just yet though because Sean was busy moving and building some new walls to make the space feel like it flowed.  We were lucky that the family wanted to be involved and with the help of my mum and youngest son, we managed to get them all done as well as getting the carpet lifted in time for the floors to be laid.  Many many late nights were needed to get everything ready though, we wanted the floors cleared, walls built and all the painting done before the floors were laid.

Finally the day had arrived for the flooring to be laid.  We chose a vintage coffee bamboo flooring from John at BenchMark Timber Flooring Mitchell and can't recommend him highly enough.  He was very professional and when we found a few little problems (mainly with a join between the carpet and floor in the hallway) he was out super quick to fix it for us. It took them an afternoon to get it all laid and now we could really start to see our vision come to life.

First impressions are important, so I knew exactly what I wanted to have as our front desk.  My very talented partner Sean built the desk from the ground up, a much more mammoth task than we thought it would be but we are so happy with the final product.  He's the builder and I'm the painter but still between us it took a week to complete.

The Desk ProjectBuilding the perfect desk took us much longer than planned but so worth it.

Finally, everything is coming together.  There are still large acrylic prints to hang on the walls, our name to be placed on the wall above the desk and some lighting changes, but the photography side of the Wilomark business is up and running.

Stay tuned for news on the music studio.  We are hopeful it will be finished and ready for its first recording session by the end of October and then we are planning a big grand opening!

If you would like to come and checkout the studio, feel free to drop in for a coffee and a chat.  Ph 02 6280 4220 for more details.

What an amazing looking studio. Love the floor boards and the curved wall. Such a great modern look. Well done. Wish you all the best.
